A cat bed beside a reclining sofa should sit outside the space used by the chair in every position. A gap beside a closed footrest is not automatically a resting spot: the footrest, back and mechanism can change the usable area when someone reclines. Plan the bed around the furniture's operating instructions and keep your cat clear while checking movement.
Map the chair before measuring the bed
With pets elsewhere, follow the sofa manufacturer's instructions to identify the clearances needed behind, in front of and beneath the chair. Check each reclining seat individually, including any sliding or swivelling action. Do not reach into the mechanism or operate it while a person or animal is in the moving area.
Make a top-down sketch showing the sofa upright and fully extended. Mark the manufacturer's required clearance around it as space that must stay empty. Include power leads, wall sockets and the route to the seat. This is a layout exercise, not a way to calculate a new safety clearance where the manual has not provided one.
Add the cat's space, not only the cushion
The Velvet Nest is a rectangular plush bed with raised sides. Its listed dimensions describe the outside of the bed, not the room taken up by a cat approaching, stretching out of it or walking away. A bed that fits just beyond the footrest outline may still put the cat's normal route through the operating area.
Place a paper outline of the chosen bed size outside the chair's clearance area while the cat is elsewhere. Check whether people can sit down, stand up and walk past without stepping over it. Remove the paper afterwards. If the arrangement only works while the recliner stays closed, choose a different bed position.
Give the bed a useful view without putting it underneath
A position to the side of the wider seating area may let your cat rest nearby without lying under moving furniture. Keep an unobstructed route back into the room and avoid hiding the bed behind a side table where you cannot easily see whether it is occupied. Do not use the bed, a blanket or a cushion to plug a gap beneath the recliner.
A separate bed does not guarantee that your cat will stop exploring the sofa. Follow the chair's pet-safety instructions and check where your cat is before operating it. Everyone using the recliner needs the same routine; a furniture layout is not a substitute for that check.
Recheck after small room changes
A moved side table, a new charging cable or an extra seat cushion can alter the arrangement. Revisit the bed position whenever the sofa moves or its normal use changes. If you cannot maintain the required space, keep the cat's resting option in another part of the room.
